Castle Hill Lighthouse

Newport, RI

Castle Hill Lighthouse, has been perched on the rugged granite cliffs of Newport, Rhode Island, on Narragansett Bay since 1890. Located at the southwestern end of Newport Neck, this iconic lighthouse marks the east side of the entrance to Narragansett Bay’s East Passage, guiding vessels into Newport Harbor and beyond.

History of Castle Hill Lighthouse

The need for a lighthouse at Castle Hill became evident in the late 19th century to aid ships entering Newport Harbor and the East Passage of Narragansett Bay. After initial resistance from landowner and Harvard naturalist Alexander Agassiz, who feared a fog signal would devalue his property, the U.S. government acquired the necessary land in 1887 for $1.

Construction commenced, and the lighthouse was first illuminated on May 1, 1890, featuring a fifth-order Fresnel lens visible for ten nautical miles. The original fog bell, weighing 1,286 pounds, was installed but later removed at Agassiz’s request due to noise concerns. A more efficient 2,000-pound bell was later added, with measures taken to minimize disturbance to the nearby residence.

The Great Hurricane of 1938 tested the lighthouse’s resilience; the tower withstood the storm, and the keeper’s house — though damaged — still stands today near Castle Hill Cove. Following the hurricane, operations transitioned to Coast Guard personnel from the nearby Station Castle Hill. The lighthouse was automated in 1957, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Castle Hill Lighthouse Architecture and Design

Castle Hill Lighthouse is one of very few lighthouses in the country built in the Richardson Romanesque style. While renowned architect H.H. Richardson made an early sketch for the station, the as-built design — which omits the attached keeper’s residence in his original drawing — is more closely attributed to H. Langford Warren of Richardson’s firm. The 34-foot-tall conical tower is constructed from granite blocks, with the upper half painted white to serve as a daymark, and the lantern room painted black. Originally equipped with a fifth-order Fresnel lens, the lighthouse now utilizes a modern VLB-44 LED beacon emitting an isophase red light every 6 seconds, visible up to 12 nautical miles.
